What is my purpose?

I used to think of my purpose as this massive plan I had stored in the back of my brain and that if I just got close enough to it, it would allow me to change the world one day. I used to get hung up on this purpose of mine — I would just wait and wait for that one thing to pop up into my consciousness and inspire me, so that I could move forward with it before anyone else got the chance to. I didn’t know what purpose really meant, but I knew I’d spent a lot of time waiting for something that wasn’t even there in the first place.

Now, my purpose means something so much different to me.

I’ve come to realize that my purpose is more about the actions I take everyday, rather than the big ‘aha’ moments I may or may not have. It requires intention and attention. Everyday, I want to be intentional — why am I doing the things I’m doing? It’s also about paying attention — listening and feeling how my body, mind and heart respond to the world at any and every given moment.

So, maybe I don’t have a big purpose — maybe none of us do. What I do know, however, is that the more time we spend thinking about it, the less time we have to actually live it.
